Bill and Tom Kaulitz, what is harder: to make music or talk like DSDS jury about music?
TOM: That test is not as difficult as we had not planned before the show, which is particularly strict but also evaluate the candidates as we would review it at home, on the couch. I found a lot of getting used to, while being filmed. I hate hearing my own voice or see pictures of myself. I've had bad experiences at school, I hate that.
So you may have chosen the wrong profession?
TOM: videos and photoshoots are certainly part of that, but playing live and produce music is more my thing. As for Bill, is different.
BILL: I'll do my thing, I do not care at all about the fact that when I'm on DSDS the expression of so many people is somehow or how are my questions.
TOM: ... but you.
BILL: My strategy is to be as honest as possible.
As jurors, who are the new German Superstar what is actually a superstar for you?
BILL: This is precisely what can not be explained. Not enough with the person on stage, remains a mystery. Having a special aura.
TOM: Many candidates come and say: "Please give me another chance, I can train with everything!." But this often does not work, because there is some basis of potential and talent that can not be taught to anyone. I also think that very few people possess that. Therefore, you may not find here a superstar, but the odds are good!
That would be nothing new. All DSDS winners have landed on the charts, but none has become a superstar.
TOM: For the winner, of course, is difficult, because every year there is a new season and a new "superstar".
BILL: And it takes a lot of luck involved. In the end it also depends on which candidate viewers will choose the winner. Perhaps many of the decisions in recent years have been mistakes.
As a talent show, to accompany candidates on everything a star needs: the mysterious and ambiguous, is it documented?
BILL: I think talent shows can be a very good school for the career and how to deal with the media. Some candidates make it quite well. In many others is only guess: it's better to keep your mouth closed.
Bill, when you were twelve you were in the Sat-1 program, "Star Search" and you were eliminated in the second round. Did this give you good luck?
BILL: At least it shows that a wrong decisision can also be an opportunity. We were very fortunate when someone reunited us as a band and we have lived a Cinderella story.
Is being in Tokio Hotel the best example that can not be born a superstar moderately in a talent show?
TOM: In the U.S., talent shows like "American Idol" have some stars that have proved moderately successful as Kelly Clarkson who won Grammys. But in fact, here in Germany - no matter the talent show - the result has never been an artist of long-term success.
What's wrong? Candidates in U.S. loaded a different quality?
TOM: United States, of course, is another music market. Here we have new national artists who make a permanent career in Germany as a whole.
But do they get it? Advise a young musician today: go to all talent show castings?
TOM: Many candidates come to the hearing and have nothing to do with music. The song can be pretty good and think they can sing very well, but there are few artists that make my heart happy.
Does that surprise you?
TOM: Sometimes you just want to pass the test and you are not serious. So I would ask a young musician: What have you done for you from now? What do you have invested in a music career? And then you have to indicate whether a talent is the right way. On the other hand, it is also more difficult to move forward now.
Why?
TOM: Because the music industry is so well lubricated in recent years and recording studios have less and less money, and do not invest in the newcomer.
Not only the music industry is reeling. Talent shows have also seen in decreasing rates, DSDS longer works as much as in the beginning of the series a decade ago.
BILL: You have to understand, of course, it is always in proportion. "DSDS" remains the best odds of all talent competitions. Therefore, I do not generalize that talent shows have no future in television. It all depends on the candidate.
And the entertainment value of the jurors. Why did you decide to participate?
BILL: The desire to see new talent, we've always had. Also years ago we received requests for all types of formats, but so far we did not have time for this. Only for "DSDS"
Are you planning to take part in more TV shows such as "Deutschland sucht den Superstar" or just for now is the only time?
BILL: We are in parallel in the studio working on our new album, scheduled for release later this year. I'm anxious to see DSDS candidates and make music all the time. We finally get to start with ourselves.
